Styling is such a fun part of having curls! The amount of techniques and product combinations are endless. There is so much you can control in the styling process, but there is also a lot that can go wrong. Below are 3 common styling mistakes and solutions to them. Don’t worry – they’re very easily fixable!
Brushing in a downward motion
The direction you brush in makes a huge difference. Brushing in a downward motion can cause your curls to dry limp and flat. Keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to detangling. This mistake is purely in regard to styling. When styling, place your brush under the section of hair (facing up) and ensure it goes in both an upward direction and away from your head. It feels a little unnatural and takes a bit of getting used to, but trust me, you’ll notice the difference.
Improper brush
Make sure that you use a brush intended for styling. It might not seem like it, but there is a big difference between styling and detangling brushes! A good styling brush will seperate your curls and define them. If you’ve ever watched a video of a girl brushing her hair and seen her curls bounce up after the brush goes through, then she is most likely using a styling brush. Styling brushes make a big difference! So make sure to use a proper styling brush and you’ll see massive improvement.
No goal/focus
You need to style based on a goal. What are you trying to achieve? Do you want definition or volume? You can achieve a bit of both, but keep in mind that you’ll have to compromise on some volume and some definition in order to obtain both. If you prefer one over the other, then make sure you style your hair with that goal in mind. Your technique and products will be very different based on what you are trying to achieve.
