If you’re suffering from flat roots, limpness and/or a lack of volume, you can easily change this through making changes to your habits and practices.
Constantly damp
If you don’t wrap your hair before taking a shower, then water droplets will inevitably come in contact with your hair. If your hair is constantly getting dampened (even if it is only a few drops each shower), limpness and flatness in the roots can take place. To avoid this, simply wrap/cover your hair before jumping in the shower.
Product buildup
Product buildup weighs down your hair, causing it to become flat and lack volume. Ensuring to detox your curls with a clarifying wash is a great way to reset the hair and remove buildup. Flora & Curl Coconut Mint Curl Refresh Clay Wash is great at absorbing dirt and buildup, leaving you with a fresh canvas.
Bad products combinations
Using multiple products at a time is a great way to achieve multiple goals at once. In saying this, some products just don’t blend together well. If in doubt, try incorporating some lightweight styling products in your routine. This step is just about trial and error and finding what products work best for you.
Incorrect application methods
The methods you use to apply product/style your hair can be the cause of flatness. For example, if you apply the product in a way toward your head, you are unintentionally pulling the hair downward. Instead, always direct your hair away from your head and upward.
Sleeping on hair
The way you sleep with your hair plays a big role in volume. If your hair is not tied up high in a pineapple and protected with a silk bonnet, you can easily crush your hair and put strain on it throughout the night. Properly protecting your hair at night will make a massive difference.
Products on the roots
Normally, applying thick products (like styling creams) close to the roots can weigh down your hair. Try to keep your roots and few centimetres down free from product.
Conditioning too high
Similarly to styling products, don’t apply conditioner directly on your roots. This can weigh down your hair and cause flatness.
These tips all have to do with washing, styling and preservation. If you’re already doing each of these correctly but still can’t get volume, it might have to do with how you wear your hair throughout the week.
