This is a series for those who haven’t worn their hair natural in a long time or want to get serious about their curls. It can be daunting and confusing to go on this journey, but you don’t have to worry! I’ll be covering the basics of curls and help you kickstart your journey.

So you've decided to go natural? Congrats - you're embarking on an exciting journey, filled with surprises! The first two posts in this series talked about what transitioning is and if it's for you. Curl Basics #3 talked about the big chop. Now, it's time to talk about the items you'll need to get started.

I've compiled a list of 7 items every curly girl needs. Don't worry, you can work yourself up to this kit! No need to rush in all at once. Do your research and add to your collection at whatever pace suits you.

1. Coily hair ties

These work so well with curls. I love to put it over my neck and then stretch it up over my head. When putting it on like this, the placement makes it ideal to give you a gorgeous, long and non-constrictive ponytail like this:

If you're confused about how to put this on, then click the link at the end of the article so watch my YouTube video of it! Buy them here.

2. Scrunchies

Silk scrunchies are so versatile, but they're extra important for curls because the excess material makes it easy to grab. Traditional hair ties easily get lost in curls and it can be painful to take them out, so silk scrunchies are perfect.

3. Silk bonnet

Silk bonnets are crucial because they help preserve your hard work of wash day! With a silk bonnet, you can stretch out the days between washes. Shop them here.

4. Microfiber towel

Microfiber towels are great for washday and refreshes. When refreshing your hair, spray it down and then use the towel to scrunch it up. This helps bring the curls back together and reduce the frizz.

5. Spray bottle

Once again, these are great for refreshes. Tip: add some essentials oils to your water to act as a natural perfume for your hair.

6. Edge + rat tail brush

These brush(es) are great if you love braiding. Whether you like to go extreme or keep them is simple, these will help make your braiding easier and sleeker. Shop them here.

7. Denman brush and Tangle Teaser

A Denman brush is a staple for styling. These brushes will consistently evaluate your hair and never disappoint!

Tangle Teasers are great because they significantly reduce time, effort and pain involved in detangling. If knots are a struggle for you, then these brushes are the answer.

I hope this list helps!
