Five years is a long time in the curly hair world. We've watched trends rise, fall, and sometimes come back around completely changed. We've worked with thousands of curls across Australia, both online through Curly Life and in-person at our flagship salon, Aria Curly Salon on the Gold Coast. Here's what genuinely stood out to us over half a decade of doing this.

1. Trends Change Fast

Five years ago, shampoo was treated like the enemy. Entire routines were built around avoiding it altogether, out of fear it would strip and damage curls. Today, the science (and the curly community's understanding of it) has come a long way. More people understand that shampoo, used correctly, is actually essential, not something to fear.

And yet, despite that shift, we still see it constantly: curly girls walking around with heavy build-up they don't even realise is there. Build-up is one of the single biggest (and most overlooked) reasons curls lose their lift, their definition, and their shape over time. Get rid of it, and roots lift, definition sharpens, volume returns, and those scraggly, stringy-looking curls finally start looking like actual curls again.

If it's been a while since you properly clarified, it might be the single biggest change you can make to your routine right now.

If you're scared of drying out your curls, Flora & Curl's Clay Wash is super lush and softening while breaking down buildup through the power of soothing clays.

2. A Lot of Salons Still Don't Get Curls Right

This hasn't changed much in five years, unfortunately. Too many salons either wildly overcharge for curly services, or simply don't have the training to deliver what curly clients actually need, leaving people walking out with a cut or a colour that fights their natural texture instead of working with it.

This is why we built Aria Curly Salon the way we did. As our flagship Gold Coast salon, we offer the full range: cuts, colour, and extensions, all backed by extensive, ongoing curl-specific training, and priced to be genuinely accessible rather than treating curly hair as a premium add-on. Curly hair shouldn't cost more just because it's curly, and it shouldn't come with a stylist who's guessing.

3. Ingredients Aren't as Simple as People Think

One of the most important things we've learned over five years: don't demonise ingredients. The same ingredient can behave completely differently depending on where it's sourced from.

Coconut oil is a perfect example. One brand's coconut oil might leave your curls heavy, greasy, and stringy. Another brand's coconut oil, same name, same label, can leave your curls with a gorgeous healthy sheen and beautiful slip. The difference isn't the ingredient itself. It's the quality, sourcing, and formulation behind it.

This is why we've always pushed back against blanket "never use this ingredient" advice. Context and quality matter far more than the ingredient name alone.

4. Influencers and Viral Trends Come and Go

What was all over your feed five years ago probably isn't being used by anyone today. Viral trends move quickly in this space, and chasing whatever's popular in the moment often means chasing something that won't even be relevant in another year or two.

The products and techniques that actually stand the test of time are rarely the loudest ones online. They're the ones backed by real results, repeated over and over, across real curl types, not a single viral video.

What Hasn't Changed

Through five years of shifting trends, evolving science, and changing products, one thing has stayed exactly the same: every single curl is different, and the best results always come from a routine built around your specific hair, not a generic trend.

If you want help figuring out exactly what your curls need, right now, come see us. We offer 100% free curl consults at Aria Curly Salon on the Gold Coast (or just call us!), no pressure, no guesswork, just an honest look at your hair and a plan built specifically for you.
