Curls have a tendency to play up and randomly start acting weird. It can be so discouraging when your routine that has always worked suddenly stops working! Here are three potential reasons as to why your curls are playing up and what do to about it.

Product buildup

I always thought clarifying shampoos wouldn't do anything...until I actually tried one. I was about 8 months into my transition and suddenly my hair looked so greasy and the pattern went crazy. My curls looked like they were all attacking each other! I was so close to giving up at this point. I bought a clarifying shampoo and after about 3 or 4 washes, my hair was looking better than ever. If you have a lot of buildup, you'll need to use the clarifying shampoo a few times to get everything out. Alternatively, you could wash your hair with it, rinse it out, reapply and wash it again. This essentially packs two washes into one shower and speeds up the process.

Over moisturised

It's possible for your curls to be over moisturised. If you use a lot of conditioning products and find that your hair is suddenly no longer looking itself, try laying off the conditioning products for a a couple wash days. If laying off the conditioner doesn't help, then try using a clarifying shampoo to reset your curls and bring them back to their usual pattern. Keep in mind that clarifying shampoos are drying, so you might need to come in with some conditioner afterwards. Of course, don't go overboard.

Not enough protein

If you aren't using any protein treatments, then you definitely need to get into them. You'll notice a massive difference once using them. I didn't use any protein treatments until about a year into my transition and I've noticed a huge difference. My hair is shinier, more consistent in pattern and my spirals are much tighter and stronger. I use a protein treatment roughly every 10-14 days. If your hair has randomly started sitting weirdly and you don't currently use protein products, you should definitely give them a shot.
