Salt, chemically known as sodium chloride (NaCl), has been long used as a natural texturiser and styling agent for hair. When applied to the hair, salt can alter the structure of the hair by breaking down the hydrogen bonds that hold the hair strands together, allowing for easier styling and manipulation.

Additionally, salt can also create an osmotic gradient on the hair, meaning that it can draw out moisture from the hair, causing it to become slightly dehydrated. This dehydration can result in the hair becoming more brittle and less elastic, which in turn can cause the hair to become more curly or wavy as it springs back from being styled or manipulated.

Furthermore, the presence of salt on the hair can also create an ion imbalance on the surface of the hair, leading to a buildup of positive ions which can cause the hair to repel each other and result in a more voluminous and curly appearance.

In summary, the application of salt to hair can alter the hair's structure and moisture content, resulting in a more curly or wavy appearance. However, it is important to note that excessive use of salt on the hair can also cause damage and dryness, so moderation and proper hair care practices are recommended.

Simply making a DIY salt water blend for your curls is NOT a good idea since you would likely overdose your hair on salt. Using a salt texturising spray is the best way to achieve the benefits of salt because is would have been specifically formulated to give curls the perfect balance of texture and volume without drying out or harming the strands.
