This is a series for those who haven’t worn their hair natural in a long time or want to get serious about their curls. It can be daunting and confusing to go on this journey, but you don’t have to worry! I’ll be covering the basics of curls and help you kickstart your journey.
Curly Basics #1: What Does ‘Transition’ Mean? covers what transitioning means, how long it takes and my personal experience before and during transition. In this article, I’ll let you know if it’s right for you and what you need to know before making the decision to go natural.
Can you trust the process?
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase” — Martin Luther King, Jr.
This quote can be applied to so many aspects of life. It perfectly explains what faith is. If you are able to jump into something without seeing the whole picture, then transitioning will be a breeze for you.
If you aren’t like this, then don’t worry because you can still do it. You’ll have to apply yourself a little more and you might find it more difficult, but remember that all difficult things are worth having. When you feel like giving up, remember this: you don’t know how amazing your hair will look. Don’t you want to find out? This brings me to my next point.
You don’t know what your hair is capable of
You truly don’t know how amazing your hair will look. And no, you cannot use childhood photos as a reference. Chances are, our mums didn’t use proper brands or products on us as kids (which is understandable). We definitely didn’t style our hair. We didn’t deep condition. Not to mention, kids don’t think about preserving hair and instead often play with it and mess it up. So don’t use your childhood photos as a reference. Your hair will look a million times better than it did as a kid.
Still not convinced? You’ll be amazed at how much kindness you’ll receive…
You’ll have a lot of support from everyone
It’s amazing how many people complimented my hair even only shortly into transition. I could have been having the worst hair day and felt so critical of my hair, only for a complete stranger to come up to me in awe and compliment me. It really does feel amazing and makes such a difference when someone does that. A kind word at the right timing does a lot. And trust me, you’ll get a lot of kind words and it’ll encourage you to keep going.
Even to this day, it really is encouraging. I always thank people who compliment me and I make sure they know how appreciative I am of their kind words. I don’t feel tempted to give up now, but back when I did feel the temptation, the compliments and support stopped me from throwing in the towel.
Don’t forget that you also have me to support you! My instagram link is above or you can contact me and I’ll help you out.
What do you have to lose? What do you have to gain?
Seriously, you don’t have anything to lose. But you do have a lot to gain. Curls are very fun. They’re versatile and always changing. You’ll look amazing because your natural and pure beauty is shining through. You’ll feel even more confident because when you look in the mirror, you’ll be seeing your natural self.
Try it. And if you have given it a good shot but you’re still not happy, then go back to your old routine. Even so, I’ve never met anyone who went natural and regretted it. So your chances of gaining something from this are pretty strong.
The picture I attached has a lot of meaning behind it. I was at a work event and felt very nervous about my hair. My feelings quickly changed! So many strangers came up to me and complimented me. They truly were in awe of my hair…and only a couple hours prior I had been beating myself up over it! I have really good memories looking back at this photo.
