Product cocktails consist of using multiple products in the same styling routine. It can even be taken a step further and even involve mixing some of those products in your hands and apply them together at the same time. For example, a fairly standard cocktail would include: starting with a leave in conditioner, adding a styling lotion/cream and locking it in with a gel.
It's important to keep in mind that product cocktails are extremely personal and what works for you depends on your hair texture. For example, I have high porosity and coarse hair. Lathering up leave in conditioners, styling lotions and hydrating gels makes my curls flourish. My hair just can't get enough hydration!
Your location/climate will also play a large part in what products you use. Before moving to my current tropical, humid home, I lived in a cool, dry climate. I could get away without using leave in conditioners every wash day. But now they're an essential for me -- regardless of the look I'm going for!
Keep in mind that not all products blend well with each other. Some will work amazingly, others will be a mess. It's truly about trial and error. To minimise chances of products not working well together, it's best to use products from the same brand. Most brands design their product to work well with each other.
This article explained the basics of product cocktails. If you want to learn how to do them as well as tips and tricks, I highly recommend checking out Curly Hair Product Cocktail Combos for Every Goal for inspiration!
