Diffusing and air drying both have their pros and cons. There isn’t a superior option and it really comes down to what you prefer and what slots in with your routine best. Here are some factors to keep in mind.
Time
Although diffusing speeds up the drying process, it does mean that you can’t do anything while your hair dries. It can take between 20 to 40 minutes to dry your hair using the diffuser. This depends on length, thickness and technique. Air drying takes much longer, but you can go about your day while your hair dries and you aren’t tied to the diffuser.
Volume
Depending on the technique you use, a diffuser can give you more volume. In saying this, the difference it makes isn’t game changing. If you want more volume, I’d recommend revising your product application, product selection or even getting a curly hair cut. You can still achieve a good amount of volume with air drying.
Best of Both Worlds
If I want some extra volume, then I’ll let my hair air dry 80% of the way. Then, I’ll diffuse for about 5 minutes. This isn’t enough time for my hair to fully dry, but it helps add some extra volume.
