Gels and mousses/foams can be mistaken for being similar. But they are actually very different. Whether a gel or foam is best for you depends on your styling goals and your hair’s needs.
What gels do:
✓ Give medium to strong hold.
✓ Help achieve hairstyles.
✓ Keep hair in place for a long time.
✓ Help lock in the products you’ve put in prior.
✓ Add more definition.
Cons of gels:
✕ Can weigh down hair.
✕ Not all gels are good for all hair types. You need to ensure that you buy a gel designed for your hair type.
✕ Can cause stiffness.
What mousses/foams do:
✓ Offer light to medium hold.
✓ Add volume to the hair and help lift it.
✓ Very versatile and are generally effective for all hair types.
✓ Tame frizz.
✓ Easy to use as a refresh product.
Cons of mousses/foams:
✕ Doesn’t add to definition (nor does it take away).
✕ Might not hold for as long as gels do.
✕ Might need to use more product at a time (compared to gels).
Based off this information, you can now work out which is ideal for you!
For reference, my hair is long, thick and heavy. I struggle to get volume, but I also love definition and I don’t want to give that up. I found that using both a foam and a gel is perfect for me because I get the volume of a foam and the definition of a gel.
