Are you experiencing an itchy scalp, dry hair prone to breakage, or lackluster coily hair? If so, product build-up may be the culprit. Understanding what it is, why it affects your scalp negatively, and how to prevent it is crucial. Read on to discover the solution to build-up in your hair.
What is product build-up?
Product build-up refers to the accumulation of substances, both natural and product-based, on your scalp and hair shaft. The product residue includes shampoo, conditioner, and hair care products. The natural build-up consists of dead skin cells and sebum, the natural oil produced by your scalp to keep your skin supple and healthy.
Although sebum is beneficial, it can’t perform its role effectively when combined with build-up. This combination can wreak havoc on your scalp and hair, leading to irritation, inflammation, and dryness.
Signs of product build-up
Think of your scalp and hair as living entities. When properly nourished and able to breathe, they remain healthy and balanced. However, the use of various products can create a barrier, preventing dead skin cells from shedding naturally and causing sebum to accumulate. As a result, your scalp may feel irritated, sore, and tight, leading to itching, inflammation, and dryness. The build-up may also flake into your hair and shoulders, while your hair itself may become dry, wiry, and dull.
Products that cause build-up
Not all products contribute to build-up. Typically, non-water soluble formulations such as mineral oil, petroleum, waxes, butters, heavy oils, and high molecular weight silicones are the culprits. It is advisable to avoid petroleum and silicone-based products and opt for water-based alternatives, as they reduce build-up and the need for excessive cleansing.
Removing and preventing product build-up
To effectively remove product build-up, it’s important to detox your hair periodically. Just as you would use a weekly face mask or exfoliation for your skin, your scalp requires a thorough cleanse from time to time. Follow these steps to get rid of product build-up in your hair:
- Gather the necessary supplies, including hair bands to section off your strands and a curl towel.
- In the shower, thoroughly wet your hair for optimal results with your clarifying cleanser.
- Divide your hair into two to four sections using the bands. This allows you to work on one section at a time for a thorough cleanse.
- Apply a Scalp Exfoliating Scrub to your palms and massage it into your scalp. The scrub contains beads that gently exfoliate and stimulate your scalp, leaving it soothed and invigorated, while making your strands soft and bouncy. Work through each section of your hair from root to tip, without scrubbing as the cleanser will do the job.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly and follow up with an a vitamin c treatment to replenish moisture. Leave the mask in for 10-15 minutes before gently detangling your hair in sections and rinsing off. Alternatively, leave the product in for an extra boost of moisture.
- Wrap your hair in a curl towel and relax, knowing you’ve successfully tackled the build-up.
Frequency of Clarifying Hair
The frequency of clarifying your hair depends on your hair type and the products you use. If you use heavy butters and waxes, clarifying once a week is recommended. If you prefer water-based products, clarifying every two weeks or once a month should be sufficient. Pay attention to how your hair responds and adjust accordingly, as you know your hair best.
