Damaged curls are discouraging and can harm self confidence. Heat, improper curl care, nasty products and harmful treatments often lead to damaged curls. The good news is that you don’t need to put up with your damaged curls! Restoring your curls to their natural, healthy state is a lengthy process and can take time, however, a few small changes to your routine will result in massive changes right away!
Let’s take a look at how to start your journey of healing damaged curls. This is a simple, straightforward guide on how to restore both your curls and your confidence!
The good to come
Since damage slowly occurs, it can sneak up on us without us realising! This is both good and bad. It is bad because you’ll suddenly realise how much damage your hair has actually endured. It is good because you likely won’t remember how good your hair used to look! This means you’re about to embark on an exciting journey of watching your curls evolve into a beautiful, healthy state that you didn’t even know you were capable of having!
Know your curls
Curl charts can get confusing, so let’s simplify things. All you really need to know is how much thickness your curls can take. Do they respond positively to thick, heavy products and soak them up well, leaving you with bouncy, defined clumps? If so, you can use thick products to style your hair. You can also layer products, too (although it is best to only layer products from the same brand).
Alternatively, do thick product textures leave your curls greasy, stretched and loose? If this is so, use lightweight products only. Even when using lightweight products, it will still take a bit of trial and error to work out how much product is best (tip: keep product away from your roots since this can lead to greasiness).
It will take a little bit of trial and error to work out how your curls respond. If you aren’t sure or want to skip this, you can simply use lightweight products and see how your curls respond. If your results are good, keep using lightweight products. If your curls feel like they need a little more help, then increase the amount of product.
Start simple
Could your curl care routine be part of the problem? Take some to consider the products you’re using, if they’re the right ones for your curls, and making swaps as necessary. Damage often comes from a rushed routine, such as being too impatient with knots, tugging or tear hair, or using high heat to dry curls. If you find yourself damaging your hair while trying to finish your curl routine, then it’s time to think about how you can revise your routine to make sure it’s the right one for you.
Start with a simple routine. Some girls enjoy turning their curl routine into self care; while other girls would prefer to quickly get it done with. Start with a simple routine and if you enjoy it, then play around with other techniques. If you don’t enjoy it, keep your routine simple. Routines don’t have to be complex in order to yield results.
Getting started
To set you up with a simple and effective curl routine, it’s best to start with:
Flora & Curl Hydrate Me Bundle + FREE Scrunchie Set
Flora & Curl Glow Up Styling Bundle + FREE Scrunchie Set
The Hydrate Me Bundle includes a gentle shampoo, hydrating conditioner and detangling leave in conditioner. These products will give you a good foundation. Follow up with the Glow Up Bundle. Gently rake your lotion into your curls. Scrunch gel in to give hold and extra definition. Finally, scrunch the foam in to help with volume.
All of these products are by Flora & Curl. It is generally best to use products from the same brand. This is recommended because brands formulate their products to work well with the other products in their line.
