Curly Girl Movement Clarifying Shampoo

The main difference is that a clarifying shampoo contains more cleansing ingredients compared to a normal conditioner. But less than a normal shampoo.

This is a reset wash. Use it on wet hair when your curls have gone limp, dull or coated, rather than at every single wash.

1. Wet your hair thoroughly. A clarifier applied to damp hair concentrates in patches instead of spreading.
2. Apply the shampoo directly to your scalp rather than your lengths, and massage with the pads of your fingers, not your nails.
3. Let the suds rinse down through the lengths on their own. That is enough to clean them, and scrubbing the lengths is what causes tangles.
4. Repeat once if your hair has weeks of styling product on it. The first wash lifts the surface, the second reaches the scalp.
5. Always follow with a conditioner or a mask. A clarifier is designed to strip buildup, so the moisture has to come back in the same wash.
6. Style on soaking wet hair, squeeze out the excess with a microfibre towel or an old cotton tee, then air dry or diffuse on low heat.

Pro tip
If your curls have stopped responding to products that used to work, clarify before you buy anything new. Buildup is behind that far more often than the products are, and one reset wash is cheaper than replacing a routine.

Hero ingredients

• Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and cocamidopropyl betaine, the two mild cleansers doing the clarifying. A sulfosuccinate is not a sulfate, so it lifts buildup without the harshness of SLS.
• Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, a conditioning agent that stays behind after rinsing, which is why a clarifier can leave hair detangled rather than squeaky.
• Panthenol, or pro-vitamin B5, which holds water in the strand so a deep clean does not leave it parched.
• Ginger rhizome and green tea leaf extracts, included for the scalp.
