Most curl creams either vanish into thirsty hair or leave a film on fine hair. This one is built on butters with a small amount of clay, so it has enough body to shape a clump and enough slip to actually spread. What makes it different

• Butters near the top of the list. Shea, cupuacu and coconut do the softening, which is what a coarse or dry strand needs before it will bend into a curl at all.
• The clay is the clever part. Montmorillonite gives a cream this rich enough grip to hold a clump together, so you get shape from your moisturiser rather than asking a gel to do all the work.
• Completely protein free. If protein-heavy routines leave your hair stiff and straw-like, this is a safe cream to build a routine around.

Worth knowing before you buy: this is a rich cream. On fine or low porosity curls a full ten cent piece will read as greasy by the afternoon, so start with half that and add more only if your ends still feel dry.

Work on soaking wet hair, straight out of the shower. Water is what lets this cream spread and clump rather than coat. If your hair dries out as you work, add water rather than more cream.

1. Section soaking wet hair into four, so every strand gets covered rather than just the top layer.
2. Take a ten cent piece per section on shoulder length hair. Halve that if your hair is fine, double it if it is thick and past your shoulders.
3. Rake it through each section from roots to ends, then smooth it down the length with praying hands, then scrunch upwards. That order matters. Raking alone leaves the cream sitting on top.
4. Follow with a gel if you want the clumps to hold past the first few hours. Scrunch the gel in, never rake it.
5. Squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel or an old cotton tee, never a bath towel.
6. Air dry for a looser finish, or diffuse on low heat for volume. Hands off until your hair is completely dry. Used on its own this cream leaves no cast to scrunch out.

Pro tip
