This is a straightforward everyday conditioner built around two conditioning agents and a pair of fatty alcohols, which is exactly what a detangler needs to be. Knots come apart under your fingers instead of snapping, frizz settles, and hair comes out of the shower smooth enough to style straight away. It is completely protein free.

Use in the shower straight after shampooing, on hair that is still soaking wet. This is a rinse-out conditioner and detangler, not a leave-in.

1. Shampoo first, then squeeze the water out of your hair so the conditioner is not diluted straight off your hands.
2. Apply generously through the mid-lengths and ends, roughly a golf ball for shoulder length hair. Keep it off the roots.
3. Detangle while it is still in your hair. Work from the ends upwards with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Never drag a comb from the roots down through a knot.
4. Leave it for two to three minutes while you finish in the shower, then rinse with cool water to help the cuticle lie flat.
5. Go straight into your styling products while your hair is still dripping. Waiting until it is damp is the most common reason definition does not hold.
6. Squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel or an old cotton tee, then air dry or diffuse on low heat.

Pro tip
Leave a little in the lengths rather than rinsing it all out. You get more slip to style over and softer ends, and on most curls it does not weigh anything down.

• Coconut oil, which absorbs into the strand rather than sitting on the surface, so hair feels softer for longer than a surface coating would give you.
• Ethyl macadamiate, a light macadamia oil ester that adds softness without the weight of a heavier oil.
• Mango and guava fruit extracts, which carry the scent and add a little antioxidant support.
