How to use your type 4 kit
The exact products in your box are chosen for you, so this is the routine to run them in. Type 4 hair is the driest and the most fragile, so the whole routine is built around sections, water and layering.

1. Section dry hair into four to eight sections before you get in the shower and clip them. Working in sections is not optional on type 4 hair, it is what prevents most of the breakage.
2. Cleanse the scalp section by section on wet hair, massaging with the pads of your fingers, and let the suds run down the lengths rather than scrubbing them.
3. Apply conditioner or a treatment generously to each section, then detangle from the ends upwards with your fingers or a wide tooth comb while it is still in. Never detangle dry.
4. Rinse with cool water and keep every section soaking wet. Re-wet a section with a spray bottle if it starts to dry out before you get to it.
5. Layer onto each soaking wet section in order: your leave-in first, then your cream or butter, then your gel last. Smooth each one down the length with praying hands, then shingle or scrunch.
6. Squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel or an old cotton tee, then air dry, diffuse on low heat, or set the sections into twists or braids and dry that way.
7. Once completely dry, separate or take down your sets, then scrunch out any cast with your hands.
8. Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase every night. On type 4 hair this does more for length retention than any product will.

Pro tip
If your hair feels dry an hour after styling, add water, not more product. Layering more butter onto a dry strand seals the dryness in. Re-wet the section, then reapply.
