The curly hair movement has been fuelled by social media and YouTube. These platforms have educated curly girls around the world and helped give them the inspiration to wear their natural hair.
Although these platforms have inspired so much good, it’s important to keep in mind that sometimes it can be easy to fall into the trap of aiming for perfection.
The danger
Lighting, angles and filters can make a huge difference in how curls look. Social media always shows off the most polished version of people. It can be easy to compare yourself to what you see on Instagram. It can even be easy to want to change your curls to look “more like hers.”
The positive
Social media can be informative and inspiring. It can teach you about ingredients, techniques and methods that will improve your curls’ health. Take the good social media can offer you, but leave the bad.
Reminder
This movement is built upon embracing and celebrating our natural beauty. Accept your curls fully.
Always make sure that your goal is healthy hair; not “perfect” hair.
The goal
Your goal should always be to be the best version of you. Nourish your curls. Treat them with respect. Prioritise their health. Take care of your curls, and they will pay you back.
As my hairdresser back in my hometown used to say… “curls aren’t meant to be perfect.”
With love,
Sarah ♡
