Struggling with knots is part of the curly journey. Every curly girl knows the dread of constant detangling. Our strands are much more prone to excessive knots due to a combination of both texture and dryness. The texture of our strands is what makes our curls unique! From tight, S-shaped curls to loose, C-shaped waves – our textures make our hair both beautiful and unique.
Although texture plays a role in knots, it is not the only reason as to why we have more knots than straight haired girls. Dryness also plays a huge part in knottiness. Drier hair = more frizz and more knots. Drier hair is also much harder to detangle (even in the shower). Wetting your hair in the shower to detangle it will help to soften your hair from the outside, but ideally you need your strands to be soft from the inside as well. This is achieved through maintaining a healthy moisture balance.
DO
Do ensure to use hydrating products out of the shower. Leave in conditioners are miracles for knot prevention. Make sure that your stylers are also hydrating and softening.
DON’T
Don’t go too heavy handed on the gel! Too much gel can contribute to drier hair and thereby more tangles.
Bonus tip
Rehydrating refresh mists play a big part in keeping curls soft and moisturised all week. On day 2-5 hair, spritz in a refresh mist to help rehydrate strands. Ensuring strands are hydrated from the inside will mean that when you get to wash day, your strands remain hydrated, making it easier for a brush to slide through.
My personal favourite mist is African Citrus Superfruit Detangling Mist by Flora & Curl!
