Silk is a staple for hair and skin care. Silk is known to enhance beauty through improving our skin and hair’s health. Silk is breathable, allowing the skin to rest well without gaining fine lines or acne.
Silk also helps hair to retain it’s natural moisture, allowing strands to feel softer and look fresher for longer. On top of all this, silk is also ultra sleek and beautiful to feel and wear.
Not all silk is created equal. There are a lot of terms to familiarise yourself with when it comes to silk. This article is a rundown on what to look for and what each term means.
Grading
Silks are graded based on their quality. Grade 6A is the highest grade. Grade 6A silk will last you longer and will provide you with a better experience.
Type of silk worm
Different species of silk worms create different types of silk. Although various silks feel luxurious, not all hold up the same. Mulberry silk is the best type by far because it is the ONLY silk that is machine washable (it is still best to wash on a gentle setting). Mulberry silk also has a much more flawless look to it. Since silk is a natural fibre, some silks can have minor flaws and inconsistencies in their textures. Mulberry silk naturally has a much more refined and flawless look and feel.
Chemicals and toxicity
Unfortunately, chemicals have made their ways into most textiles nowadays. In saying this, all of them do. There is an excellent certification organisation called Oeko-Tex. Oeko-Tex will assess textiles and certify ones that are chemical free. Oeko-Tex Stand 100 is the highest standard. Standard 100 means the textile is 100% free from chemicals and natural.
Quality of the garment itself
Although the silk might be grade 6A, standard 100 and Mulberry, this all means nothing if the brand don’t stitch and design the garment to high standards. When buying silk products, it is always great to look at reviews first to get a better idea of the quality and to know how well it will hold up.
