If extreme definition is your goal, this article is for you!
Curling custards/creams
Different products have different purposes. If you want to maximise definition, using a product aiming at doing so is the best way to reach this goal. You’ll notice a big difference when you use products made to define. You can even mix it up and use two curling creams at the same time. Spice things up and test out different products and product combinations to find out what your hair loves most.
Apply product to small sections
The way you apply the product matters just as much as the product itself. While my hair is wet, I love to section my hair down the middle at the back of my head and horizontally at my ears. This leaves me with 4 sections. Starting with a lower section, I clip the remaining 3 sections of hair aside. I will then pick out a smaller section of about 6 cm (2.3 inches) long. I brush over it with a styling brush a few times. Once I’m happy with how my curls have separated and the way they bounce up, then I rub some product on the tips of my fingers and scrunch that little 6 cm section up toward my roots with the product.
This method works really well for me because I brush my curl until I am happy with it and then use the product to enhance it. By doing this in extremely small sections (and with a small amount of product in each mini 6 cm section), I am able to get every curl well coated and with the product applied in a way that adds to its bounce and shape. If you follow this routine, it’s important to make sure you use a cream/custard specifically designed for definition. I’ve tried this with leave-in conditioners and it doesn’t work the same. This is a defining-product-exclusive method.
Styling brush
I’ve talked about the power of styling brushes in my articleย 3 Common Styling Mistakes. When it comes to definition, styling brushes are a core essential. A proper styling brush will seperate your curls and help them to spring up. Through separating your curls, it reduces frizz and defines them. You’ll notice a massive difference in definition even while your hair is wet!
