Gel Cast 101: How to Scrunch Out the Crunch for Soft, Defined Curls

If you’ve ever finished styling your curls, waited for them to dry… and then thought, “Why do my curls feel crunchy?” Congratulations. You’ve successfully created a gel cast, and that’s actually a very good thing.

At Curly Life, we see this moment all the time. Curlies panic, jumping to the shower, or assume they’ve used the wrong product. But trust us: that crunchy stage is your curls doing exactly what they’re supposed to do.

Let’s break down what a gel cast is, why it matters, and how to scrunch out the crunch properly using Bouclème styling products, so you end up with soft, bouncy, frizz-free curls that last.

What is a gel cast (and why do curls need it)?

A gel cast forms when you apply a styling product like Bouclème Super Hold Styler or Bouclème Curl Defining Gel to wet hair. As your curls dry, the product hardens slightly around each curl, locking your natural curl pattern into place.

This temporary “shell” is what gives curls:
  • Definition
  • Frizz control
  • Long-lasting hold
  • The crunch is not the final result, it’s just a protective stage while your curls set.

Why gel casts are actually a curl’s best friend

Locks in curl definition

When curls are wet, they’re at their most vulnerable. A Bouclème gel cast supports each curl as it dries, helping it set in its natural shape instead of stretching, dropping or frizzing out.

Creates a frizz barrier

The cast shields curls from humidity, airflow and friction while drying, which is especially important in Australian weather.

Helps curls last longer

A good gel cast means your curls can last days, not hours. Less refreshing, less styling, more good hair days.

Choosing the right Bouclème gel for your curls

Not all gels create the same type of cast. Here’s how to choose:

Bouclème Curl Defining Gel

Best for waves to curls wanting a medium hold. Lightweight, hydrating and soft once scrunched out.

Bouclème Super Hold Styler

Ideal for curls that drop easily, humid climates, shorter styles or anyone wanting strong, long-lasting hold.

You can also layer them for stronger results.

How to scrunch out the crunch: step-by-step

This is where the magic happens.

Step 1: Prep properly

After washing, apply Bouclème Curl Cream to soaking wet hair. This step is crucial — using gel alone can lead to dry or stringy curls.

Curl Cream adds moisture, slip and softness underneath the hold.

Step 2: Apply your gel on very wet hair

While hair is still dripping wet, rake your chosen Bouclème gel through section by section. Finish by scrunching upward to encourage curl formation.

Wait it out...
  • Now leave it alone.
  • The golden rule: your hair must be completely dry
  • This cannot be skipped.
  • Do not scrunch while your hair is even slightly damp. Scrunching too early breaks the gel cast before it’s finished setting, leading to frizz and less definition.
  • Air dry or diffuse on low heat until every strand feels fully dry and crunchy.
  • Optional: add a tiny amount of oil

Once hair is 100% dry, you can add a drop or two of Bouclème Revive 5 Hair Oil to your palms.

This helps soften the cast while adding shine and reducing friction. Less is more.

Scrunch out the crunch

Cup sections of your curls in your hands and gently squeeze upwards towards the scalp.

Focus on the crunchiest areas first. You’ll feel the cast breaking and your curls instantly becoming soft, bouncy and touchable.

For extra volume, gently separate larger curl clumps or scrunch with your head tilted.

Add volume without frizz

Once the cast is broken:

  • Use fingertips to gently lift roots
  • Flip your head and shake lightly
  • Avoid raking fingers through lengths
  • This keeps definition intact while adding body.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Scrunching before hair is fully dry
  • Using too much oil or serum
  • Over-touching curls after scrunching
  • Let the products do the work.

Other ways to soften a gel cast

  • Scrunch with a microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt
  • Warm the cast gently with a diffuser on low heat
  • Let it soften naturally throughout the day if you’re low-effort
