Straight From Our Trained Curl Pros

In a salon, time matters. We can't spend 45 minutes diffusing one guests hair and still run on schedule for the rest of the day, so over the years, we've picked up techniques that genuinely cut diffusing time down, without sacrificing definition or frizz control. The good news? Every one of these works just as well at home as it does in our chairs.

Here's exactly what we do.

1. Hairspray Before You Diffuse

It sounds backwards, hairspray before drying, not after, but this is one of our favourite time-saving tricks. A light mist of hairspray helps break down water in the hair more effectively, which means your hair dries noticeably faster under the diffuser. It also helps set your curl pattern as it dries, so you're getting speed and hold in one step.

We reach for the Rizos Curls Alcohol-Free Volumizing Hair Spray for this. It's lightweight, alcohol-free, and gives volume and hold without any stiffness or flaking, exactly what you want before you start diffusing.

2. Add Foam to Your Routine

Foam does something gels and creams alone can't: it props curls up and stops them from clumping too tightly against each other. When your curls aren't overly stuck together, airflow from the diffuser can actually move through your hair properly instead of just hitting the surface. That means more even, more effective drying, section by section.

We love the Flora & Curl Sweet Hibiscus Curl Volumizing Foam for this step. It's lightweight, adds real lift and body, and layers beautifully with your gel or cream without weighing curls down.

3. Use a Negatively Charged Ionic Diffuser

This is the big one. An ionic diffuser doesn't just rely on heat to dry your hair, it releases negatively charged ions that break down water molecules more efficiently, which speeds up drying significantly without needing to crank the heat. It also smooths the hair cuticle as it works, which means smoother, longer-lasting curls on top of the faster drying time.

This is exactly why, in our salon, we can diffuse on high speed and high heat and still get beautifully defined, frizz-free results in a fraction of the time it would otherwise take.

Our pick for this is the Luxe Curls Ionic Hair Diffuser, it's the same technology we rely on in-salon, available for your at-home routine.

Put It All Together

Here's the order we use in the salon:

  1. Style your hair as usual with your leave-in, cream, and/or gel
  2. Add a layer of Flora & Curl Volumizing Foam to prop your curls up
  3. Finish with a light mist of Rizos Curls Alcohol-Free Volumizing Hair Spray
  4. Diffuse using the Luxe Curls Ionic Hair Diffuser on high speed and high heat, without scrunching, shaking, or moving your hair around while it dries

Combine all three, and you'll notice a real difference in how quickly your curls dry, without compromising on definition or frizz control. It's a genuine salon technique, just made simple enough to use at home, every single wash day.
