I have coarse, high porosity hair & I live in Queensland – so my hair gets VERY frizzy VERY quickly. Here are some tips that make a huge difference!
Leave in conditioner is a must!
Lightweight formulas (like Flora & Curl Rose Water & Honey Leave-in Detangler) are great because you can layer them easily.
Deep condition weekly
Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner keeps my hair soft for days! Its unique texture doesn’t weigh down my hair, so I can actually leave in a little bit of residue after rinsing it out.
Importance of refreshing
If you go too long without refreshing your curls, frizz will keep increasing and make it harder to refresh. Try to refresh daily. Sprays are the quickest and easiest to use.
My personal favourite is CURLS Lavish Curl Moisturizer
Root frizz
If your hair is anything like mine, you probably struggle with extremely frizzy roots. As the week progresses, I’ll end up with frizz at my roots and ultra tight spirals at my ends. I always have to put a bit of extra effort into making sure my root-frizz doesn’t get out of control.
It’s always best to stay away from applying creams to the roots because they can weigh the hair down.
If your roots just can’t get enough moisture, try out Alikay Naturals Botanicals Hair and Scalp Balm. This is great because it was designed go on the roots. Thanks to its natural formula, this refresh product doesn’t clog at all. It’s a must-have for anyone living in a humid location or dealing with frizz!
Gels over mousses
I’m a huge fan of mousses, but I typically like to use them to refresh (because they’re super easy to apply on dry hair) or to achieve a certain look (lots of volume).
In saying this, mousses don’t offer the same level of hold that gels do. For more on this, check out my article on Gels Versus Foams/Mousses.
Moisturising from the inside
Moisturising is important to get right. Many products give the fake appearance of soft, moisturised hair by coating the hair rather than entering it and truly moisturising it.
This is why natural products with natural ingredients is so important. Ingredients like shea butter, avocado oil and coconut oil and immensely hydrating and are found in many natural products. Look for products with these powerful ingredients if you want to experience REAL moisturising.
Curly Life is committed to stocking high-quality products that truly achieve what they promise to.
Learn to work with your hair, not force it
Having textured hair truly is an adventure! Enjoy it, have fun, play around with product cocktails and have a good time. Focus on helping your hair flourish and having healthy curls. Don’t try to force it to be “perfectly” defined 24/7. Enjoy the journey and focus on your hair’s health above appearance.
