Curly Cut Horror Story

Many curlies come to our salon after bad experiences elsewhere. This one had everything go wrong: from social media pressure to an unwanted after, this one sadly has it all. We've changed a few details to protect our client's privacy, but everything else here is what happened to her at a different Gold Coast salon before she found our signature salon.

If you're searching for a curly hairdresser on the Gold Coast, this is exactly the kind of experience we want to help you avoid.

This is Emily's experience and we are grateful that she trusted us after her bad experience at the other salon.

It Started With the Price Tag

She paid nearly $100 more for her curly cut at the other salon than she would have with us. That's not a small gap, that's the cost of two-three good curl products, gone, before she'd even sat in the chair. And as you'll see, the extra cost didn't buy her a better result. It bought her a worse one.

Her Privacy Wasn't Respected

When you book online at Aria, every client chooses their own social media comfort level when they book: full consent, faceless only, or nothing at all. Most of our clients choose faceless, and we're SO grateful for that, because it still lets us show the real diversity of curl types we work with every day, without ever compromising anyone's comfort.

This client wasn't given that choice. She was uncomfortable with photos being taken, and that discomfort was ignored. She even said that she didn't like how she looked that day, but was ignored. Worse, the entire session was filmed from start to finish. a camera in her face throughout an appointment where she wasn't even feeling her best to begin with. That's not content. That's disregarding a client's boundaries for the sake of a post.

The "After" Photos Weren't Real

By the end of the appointment, she didn't hate her cut. But she also didn't love it, and the difference between how she actually looked and what ended up online was staggering. The stylist posed her, forced unnatural angles, and styled the shot purely for the photo, not for how her hair would actually sit in real life. What she saw in the mirror at home looked nothing like what was posted.

The Grow-Out Told the Real Story

This is where things really fell apart. The layers were choppy, carved into harsh, dramatic shelves, the kind of cut that photographs well for a dramatic before-and-after reel, but doesn't actually function as a real, everyday haircut. It only looked good from one angle, under one specific styling method, for one photo.

As it grew out, those harsh layers became impossible to manage and increasingly obvious in the worst way. A curly cut should be built to grow out smoothly, not just to perform for a camera on day one.

The Product Recommendations Made It Worse

To finish her off, she was recommended products from a well-known, heavily marketed haircare brand. In our experience, products like these are frequently linked to heavy build-up, greasy, weighed-down curls and in some cases, we've even had clients come to us with scalp issues after extended use.

She was paying a premium price for products that, realistically, perform worse than something you could grab for a few dollars at the supermarket.

And Then, the Diffusing

Her goals were specific: lifted roots, more bounce throughout. Instead, the diffuser was placed on the floor and left there while her hair dried, no shaping, no lift, no attention to what she actually wanted. In a busy salon, we understand things move fast. But this wasn't just a missed five minutes. It was a missed opportunity to actually teach her how to recreate those results herself at home, which is just as important as the cut itself.

How We Fixed It

When she came to us, we addressed every single one of these issues: a cut designed to grow out beautifully instead of falling apart, products chosen specifically for her hair's needs rather than a marketing budget and a proper diffusing technique, taught step by step, so she could actually achieve her own goals at home, not just leave looking good for one day.

The Takeaway

Don't waste your money, and don't waste your time. A great curly cut isn't the one that gets the most likes. It's the one that actually looks good every single day, as it grows, in real life, not just in a posed photo.
